My Take on Netiquette

"Netiquette" is currently an emerging term right now in our generation. It revolves around the behavior, manners, and safety measures we should observe when using digital or online resources. Danger lurks anywhere: so we better be safe!

Here are incidences that have happened to people I know involving only safety and etiquette. Click on a picture, and see what solution I have given if you ever come across the said situation!

What to do when you get cyberbullied?

You don't have to fight the bully back. You have the option to ignore and/or block the user who is bullying you. You can tell a trusted friend or loved one about your situation if you get affected.

If you're not sure of how the way you are cyberbullied, here's the list of types of cyberbullying:
1. Flaming - using vulgar language in online fights
2. Harassment- sending of nasty messages
3. Denigration - downgrading someone online
4. Impersonation - pretending to be someone else online
5. Outing - exposing sensitive information or secrets of somebody else
6. Trickery - tricking someone into reveal secrets then sharing them
7. Exclusion - intentionally excluding someone from an online forum
8. Cyberstalking - intimidating someone online

What to do when you get hacked?

It is highly suggested to change passwords on your accounts. If a hacker gets access to one of our accounts, it is best to change not only one but all accounts just to be safe. You can also enable two-factor authorization. Inform a trusted person about the hacker.

You may also create a new account if you're no longer comfortable using the hacked one.

Hackers can usually come from inside or outside your organization, but they're always up to no good if you witness one. They can possibly impersonate you, put spam in your files which can slow down the software or suddenly fill up you storage (considered as adware), expose you, or mess around with your files and information.

What to do when you want to post something online?

Make sure your content does not contain any sensitive information that could expose you, such as your full name, address, and others. This also applies if posting about somebody else. These can be used against you like identity theft. Identity theft is when someone impersonates a certain person or organization by using their pictures and information, and even imitating their way of speaking or posting online.

Another factor you should consider is that your content is not malicious and/or offensive. Make sure you are not hurting anyone with the content you are about to post. It is okay to post humor online, but always consider the context.

What to do if you receive a link or a message from an unknown sender?

If it's a message asking for your credentials, always double-check the message. Look out if it asks you to send your password. Check the grammar. If it asks for your password or the grammar seems off, even if it claims to be from a legitimate account, it is best to ignore, delete, or put the message in "spam". They are luring you as your victim for hacking or other cybercrimes. This is known as phishing.

If it's a message with a link, probably a file or a website, do not click it immediately, It may contain a virus that could harm your entire system. Using websites for tricking people is called pharming.

What to do if you are using information from another site/author?

Always give the author credits or citation as respect for their work, as it is their original output. This applies to any output you create, such as essays, papers, and the like. Failure to accredit the authors, may they be a primary or secondary source, is considered as plagiarism.

What to do when you have a friend online?

Having online friends may be fun, but there are still borders. Don't share sensitive information with them, as they may be faking their identify or impersonating someone else. Some people tend to be friends at first just to cyberbully you after a while. If they start to harass, denigrate, trick you for your information, or start stalking you, or any noticeable unusual behavior, report the account immediately.
